The operation was carried out by the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), gendarmes and police teams after they found evidence that the Maoist Communist Party (MKP) planned to carry out terrorist attacks and demonstrations against state authorities to further their group’s ends. An MKP member known as Rıfat, head of the organization’s Marmara regional branch, was closely monitored by MİT, gendarmerie and police teams. After surveillance teams determined the suspect’s address and those of his associates, the teams launched simultaneous raids on nine addresses in six İstanbul districts.
Nine MKP members, including Rıfat, were detained for involvement in terrorist activities. The suspects were later referred to an İstanbul court. Dozens of computers, hard drives, CDs, DVDs, USB drives, books and organization-related documents were seized during the raids.
